Cloud Web Hosting Explanation

What is cloud hosting in reality? The word 'cloud' appears to be quite modern in today's computing, Internet and hosting phraseology. Still, just a select few really are informed about what cloud hosting is. Perhaps it is a sensible idea to inform yourself about cloud hosting services. To render a quite lengthy story succinct, we will firstly notify you about what cloud hosting is not.

1. Cloud Hosting is Not Restricted to a Remote Data Storage Only.

1. Providing a remote data storage solution, which involves one single data storage device for all users, does not turn any given hosting provider into an authentic cloud hosting vendor.

The cPanel hosting firms call the ability to offer remote data storage services a cloud hosting service. Until now there is nothing bad about the cloud terminology, but... we are discussing hosting services, not remote file storage solutions for individual or corporate purposes. There's always one "but", isn't there? It's not enough to name a shared web hosting solution, based on a one-single-server web hosting environment, exactly like cPanel, a "cloud hosting" service. That's because the remaining constituents of the whole hosting platform must be functioning in precisely the same way - this does not apply solely to the remote file storage. The rest of the services involved in the whole hosting process also must be remote, separated and "clouded". And that's extremely difficult. A very meager number of web hosting service providers can actually attain it.

2. It Involves Domain Names, E-mailboxes, Databases, File Transfer Protocols, Hosting CPs, etc.

Cloud hosting is not confined to a remote data storage only. We are discussing a web hosting service, serving countless domain names, websites, mail accounts, and so on, are we not?

To name a hosting service a "cloud hosting" one requires a lot more than delivering plainly remote file storage mounts (or perhaps servers). The e-mail server(s) need to be dedicated exclusively to the electronic mail linked services. Performing nothing different than these particular tasks. There might be only one or probably a whole bundle of e-mail servers, based on the total load created. To have a true cloud hosting solution, the remote database servers should be operating as one, regardless of their real quantity. Carrying out nothing different. The same goes for the customers' Control Panels, the FTP, etc.

3. There are Cloud Domain Servers (DNSs) as well.

The DNSs (Domain Name Servers) of an actual cloud hosting distributor will support multiple server farm sites on different continents.

Here's an illustration of a DNS of an actual cloud hosting company:

dns1.www.bigmwebhosting.com

dns2.www.bigmwebhosting.com

If such a Domain Name Server is supplied by your hosting plans provider, it's not a sure thing that there is a cloud hosting platform in use, but you can definitely be confident when you spot a Domain Name Server like the one underneath:

dns658.hostgator.com

dns659.hostgator.com

that there isn't any cloud hosting service. This kind of DNS just illustrates that the web hosting environment in use is one-single-server based. Perchance it's cPanel. cPanel is a one-server hosting solution and holds a market share of more than 98%. In cPanel's case, one single physical machine takes care of all hosting services (web, e-mail, DNS, databases, File Transfer Protocol, web hosting CP(s), files, and so on).

Remote File Storage - The Warped Definition of Cloud Hosting.

So, a cloud hosting solution is not confined only to a remote disk storage solution, as numerous web hosting vendors wish it was. Unluckily for them, if that was the case, most of the file hosting providers would have been categorized as cloud hosting ones a long time back! They are not categorized as such, because they plainly supply file hosting services, not cloud web hosting services. The file web hosting platform appears indeed quite plain, when compared to the hosting platform. The remote file storage platform is not a cloud web hosting platform. It cannot be, as it's just one small segment of the entire cloud hosting platform. There's plenty more to be discovered in the cloud web hosting platform: the Control Panel cloud, the database clouds (MySQL, PostgreSQL), the DNS cloud, the File Transfer Protocol cloud, the e-mail cloud and... in the foreseeable future, perhaps a number of new clouds we currently are not aware of will turn up out of the blue.
